Part of Your Regular Checkup

Oral Cancer Screening in Northridge

An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless check that looks for early signs of trouble in the mouth and throat. Caught early, oral cancer is far more treatable, which is why we include a screening as part of your routine dental exams.

Oral cancer screenings are part of preventive care at Northridge Dental Group, a multi-specialty practice serving the San Fernando Valley since 1974.

What an oral cancer screening involves

The screening is a careful visual and physical check of your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and throat for anything unusual. It takes only a few minutes, does not hurt, and is done as part of your regular exam at no extra visit.

During the screening, we look for spots, sores, lumps, or color changes that do not look right, and we gently feel the tissues of the mouth and neck. Most of the time everything is normal. When something needs a closer look, finding it early is exactly the point.

Why early detection matters

Oral cancer is much more treatable when it is found early, before it has a chance to spread. Because you see your dentist regularly, a dental visit is one of the most natural places for these changes to be noticed. That is why we make screening a routine part of your dental exams.

Things to mention at your visit

  • A sore or spot in the mouth that has not healed in two weeks
  • A lump, thickening, or rough patch you can feel
  • Ongoing soreness, numbness, or trouble swallowing
  • A red or white patch that does not go away

If you notice any of these, do not wait for your next cleaning. Call us and we will take a look. Keeping up with regular check-ups is the simplest way to stay ahead of problems.

Oral Cancer Screening Questions

For most people, once a year is a good rhythm, and we include the check as part of your regular exams. If you have risk factors, we may suggest checking more often. Your dentist will recommend the right schedule for you at your visit.

Not at all. It is a gentle visual and physical check of the mouth, throat, and neck, and it takes only a few minutes. There are no needles and no discomfort. Most patients do not even realize it is happening as part of their exam.

Risk can be higher with tobacco or heavy alcohol use, significant sun exposure to the lips, and some viral infections, and risk tends to rise with age. That said, oral cancer can affect people with no known risk factors, which is why routine screening for everyone is worthwhile.

Finding an area to watch does not mean it is cancer. Many spots are harmless. If something needs a closer look, we explain the next step clearly, which may be monitoring the area or referring you to a specialist for further evaluation. You are never left guessing.
