About the practitioner

Ali Sotoodeh is a Certified Hypnotherapist, a Certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner, and a Certified Success and Life Coach. Frequently asked questions about hypnosis in dentistry

A natural state of focused attention that most people enter regularly without noticing, such as being absorbed in a book or driving a familiar route. It is not what films and television portray.

Yes. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis, and you remain in complete control throughout. You will not say or do anything you do not want to, or anything that goes against your principles.

No. You are awake, able to talk and move, and fully in control of your faculties. It is a relaxed and heightened state of focus rather than sleep.

The conscious mind and body relax while the subconscious becomes more receptive, which is what allows positive suggestions to take hold. For dental fear, that means addressing the anxiety at its source rather than managing it in the chair.

They do different things. Sedation gets you comfortably through a specific appointment. Hypnotherapy aims at the underlying fear, so future visits become easier. Some patients use both.
