April is at our doorsteps, and this is the time of year that the American dental community promotes oral and throat cancer awareness for the public. This is an increasingly important program, because the cure rates for this type of cancer are typically low, killing 8,000 people every year unless it is caught early on. The survival rate, like many types of cancers, depends on early detection and treatment. At Northridge Dental, our goal is to diagnose oral cancer in the earliest stages, so we will be looking for these symptoms at your checkups:

 A thick lump, hard spot, or a rough, crusty area in the mouth.
 Unusual tenderness, pain or numbness in the mouth.
 If the bite pattern has changed (how the teeth fit together when biting down).
 A sore throat or neck mass.
 Sores in the mouth that bleed easily and heal.

While in the past, the biggest risk for oral cancer was linked to adults who smoked, used tobacco, and had high rates of alcohol consumption. Now the youth are more at risk, as oral and pharyngeal cancer is rising in the younger generation because of HPV (the human papillomavirus), and today has become the leading cause of oral cancer.

Along with a healthy, beautiful smile, our goal is to help you have a long and healthy life. To schedule a visit with one of our caring dentists, Drs.
